Acronym: áAn abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word.
Abbreviation: áA shortened form of a word of phrase.

The world of education, like many other broad areas, includes numerous acronyms and abbreviations that are often not very well defined or explained. áIt can be very frustrating to be confronted with these things when you have little familiarity with them.

Education-related abbreviations and acronyms can be especially annoying; there are many of them, and they are often thrown around as if everybody understands their meaning.

This is the first in a series of small, semi-regular columns that will help to explain some of these pesky acronyms/abbreviations.

BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services): áThese boards provide shared educational programs and services with and for school districts. áThere are many of them around New York State. Long Lake Central School is part of the Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES.

ELA (English & Language Arts): áRefers to reading, literature, writing, speaking and listening in the world of English coursework.

IEP (Individualized Education Plan): áA written statement (for a student with a disability) developed by a team of knowledgeable professionals with input from parents. áThe IEP describesástudent strengths as well as how the student will be served and what goals she/he should be meeting.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics): áA STEM curriculum attempts to integrate these four subjects by cultivating creativity and developing skills that drive innovation

STEAM: add Art to the above-noted STEM, with a similar purpose.
